It staffed a Trust & Safety unit to investigate scams, fraud, even criminal reports, and kick bad actors off the platform. It’s expensive, messy work. But it’s why people trusted Airbnb more than a couchsurfing forum.

The genius wasn’t just building the mechanics. It was hiding them under a story. Guests didn’t hear about ID verification, liability clauses, and arbitration. They heard “you can belong anywhere.” That’s the sleight of hand: Airbnb sold idealism on the surface while running a compliance machine underneath. And it worked.
